Actually, Phenoms are rather very cheap today. Current prices in chennai for example, are Rs. 5000 for Phenom X3 8450 2.1GHz and Rs. 7300 for Phenom X4 9550 2.2GHz.

You think you can beat those prices with Intel ?

And currently, there is a huge increase in the prices of Intel motherboards. For a decent board you need to shell out atleast Rs. 5,500 and these don't come with decent onboard graphics. So add Rs. 1,300 to a basic GPU. The money you will be left with will be too little for a CPU. Unless you are in the high end segment, where AMD has nothing to compete against Intel, AMD is the best choice today.

Take a look at the things that make AMD a killer:

ATI Radeon HD4870 512MB GDDR5 for 13.5K
ATI Radeon HD4850 512MB GDDR3 for 9.7K
ATI Radeon HD3450 256MB GDDR2 for under 2K

790FX CrossFireX motherboards for AMD CPUs for 6.5K
Gigabyte or MSI 780G motherboards for AMD CPUs for 4.5K
Zotac GF8200 Motherboard for AMD CPUs for 3.5K
Palit or Jetway 690G/V motherboards for AMD CPUs for 2.5K

AMD Phenom X4 9550 2.2GHz Quad Core CPU for 7.5K
AMD Phenom X3 8450 2.1GHz Triple Core CPU for 5K
AMD Athlon X2 4800 2.5GHz Dual Core CPU for 3.5K
AMD Athlon X2 4600 2.4GHz Dual Core CPU for 3K

All these, can ensure that AMD is a strong force in the low end and mainstream segment, while it is unchallenged in the mid range value segment.

The phenom X3 is a viable option, and it certainly has many good points up against Intel in that range. But any other phenom? No Sir, I'd wait for sometime using my Celeron D. :)
